713,302. Picking up loose vegetation. JACOBSEN, J. A., and JACOBSEN, E. J., [trading as BRODRENE JACOBSEN.] Oct. 9, 1952 [Oct. 16, 1951], No 25368/52. Class 6 (3). [Also in Group XXX] A pick-up loader, of the type having a pickup cylinder comprising a multi-section drum 6 with prongs 9 protruding through the spaces 8 between adjacent sections, the prongs being mounted on an eccentric shaft 7 within the drum, is characterized in that the drum and shaft are driven at the same speed from a common source but by independent driving means. The machine includes a wheeled frame 1 carrying an endless elevator 17 which lifts the pickedup crop to a point above a trailer (not shown) attached to the hitch 20. The frame 1 is drawn by a tractor which drives a cross-shaft 12 through bevel gearing 15. Sprockets 13, 14, and chains 10, 11 transmit the drives to the drum and shaft respectively. The drum (Fig. 4) comprises endwalls rotatably mounted in bearings 32 on the frame 1 and interconnected by tubular transverse shafts 23 to which arcuate drum-sections 6a, 6b, 6c are bolted, the sections being stiffened by internal webs 26. The shaft 7 carries spaced triangular plates 37 from which bars 38 extend equi-angularly. The bars carry the prongs 9 which have resilient mountings comprising helical or spiral coils 42. The prongs retract completely into the interior of the drum at the point where the pick-up cylinder passes its load to the elevator 17.
