Class 146(1) [Also in Group X] A filing system for tabulating cards and other business stationery comprises a row of multiple tray rotary files alongside which a carriage runs on guide-ways, the carriage having a seat and a work table for an operator enabling a large quantity of filed material to be handled from a sitting position. As shown in Fig. 6, a carriage 116 is arranged to move on guide-ways 119 formed in a base plate 122 between two rows of rotary files 111, 112, 113 and 114, the carriage being open beneath the feet of a seated operator to enable the operator to move the carriage. The files are surrounded by a dustproof housing 126 having an access opening 127 which may be closed when the file is not in use. The rotary files may comprise. Fig. 1, circular trays 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 spaced one above the other and mounted for independent rotation about a central hollow column 16 supported by base 17. The trays have radial webs 19 and with the exception of the lowest platform 15 are formed with a segmental gap such as 28 to allow access from above to material on the platforms, a brace 24 extending across the gap between radial webs 22 and 23. The trays may hold file boxes 25 held in position by angle-members 26 and 27 or as shown in Fig. 6 some of the trays may be adapted to support correspondence folders in circumferential stacks. Each tray is provided with a braking device comprising pads urged by a spring mounted within the column 16 against the undersurface of the tray, a foot pedal 33 being provided to release the brake and enable a tray to be rotated. A detent device is also provided for each tray to prevent accidental rotation of the trays when the brakes are released and the operator is rotating a particular tray. In a modification the lowest part of the file is non-rotatable and has a polygonal housing 61, Fig. 4, surrounding the central column 16 and radial partitions 63 form a series of. storage compartments. Radial slots 64 may be provided in the top surface of the base 17 to receive tabs of movable partitions or index cards.
