Abstract

In the production of regenerated cellulose filaments from viscose or cuprammonium solutions of cellulose, there are incorporated in the spinning solutions sulphonic acid esters of alkanolamines of the formula (R1.SO2.OR)m.NHp.(ROH)n, where m and n are 1 or 2, p is 0 or 1, R is an alkyl radical and R1 is an alkaryl radical. Preferably compounds of the formula (R1.SO2.OR)2.NROH are used. Trialkanolamine esters or ethers of higher fatty acids or higher fatty alcohols, particularly those with cation-active properties, may also be added to the spinning solutions as animalizing agents. Pigments, or dyestuffs containing residues having cation activity may also be added to the solutions. In an example, 5 kgs. of copper phthalocyanide are mixed with 2.5 kgs. of triethanolamine-di-benzylethylene sulphonic acid ester of formula (CH2 : CH.CH2.C6H4. SO2.O.C2H4)2.N.C2H4.OH and added to 1,000 kgs. of viscose. In the other example 2.5 kgs. of tributanolaminedi - ethylnaphthalene sulphonic acid ester having the formula (C2H5. C10H6.SO2.O.C4H8)2.N. C4H8.OH are stirred to form a fine emulsion with 25 kgs. of dilute acetic acid in which 5 kgs. of the triethanolamine diether of lauryl alcohol have been dissolved. This emulsion is added to 1,000 kgs. of viscose. The addition of the sulphonic acid esters to spinning solutions prevents the flocculation of other additives of strong cation activity, minimizes the clogging of spinnerets, particularly when delustring pigments such as titanium dioxide are added to the spinning solutions, increases the extensibility of the filaments spun from the solutions and improves their handle and absorptive capacity for acid dyestuffs.
