Abstract
712,672. Dynamo - electric machine. BIRLEC, Ltd. (Ajax Engineering Corporation). May 26, 1949, No. 21713/52. [Divided out of 712,605 under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts. Nov. 11, 1949]. Class 35 [Also in Group XI] Converting electrical energy into motion of fluids by the action of magnetic fields: Successive equal quantities of molten metal are discharged from a receptacle in which metal is heated by a submerged resistor type induction unit having a secondary melting loop 16, 18 opening into the receptacle, which has a discharge tube 20 having an upper end extending outside the receptacle and a lower end extending into a channel 18 of the melting loop, said lower end having an internal restriction 24. The discharge tube 20 through which the metal is intermittently forced is of refractory material and is inclined relatively to the metal surface. The restriction at the lower end of the tube 20 comprises a tubular inset 24 secured within the tube end extending into the channel 18, the loops and induction unit being secured to the bottom wall of the receptacle. The central melting loop channel 18 is more inclined to the horizontal than the two outer channels. The receptacle is triangular in vertical cross-section as in Specification 712,605 and on an inclined wall 3 is mounted a submerged resistor type induction heating unit with a refractory block 32 having a secondary melting channel, 18 and two lateral channels extending from a horizontal channel into the receptacle, as in Specification 642,199, [Group XI]. The receptacle is tilted about a horizontal axis 30 passing through the outer end 21 of the tube 20 by a pivoted hydraulic piston 31. The primary of the induction unit comprises two coils, which may be connected singly, in series or in parallel, the metal being pumped when the coils are in parallel. The temperature of the metal may be controlled by a thermostat controlling the connection of the primary coils. The vessel may form a melting chamber, or molten metal may be fed thereto from an adjacent vessel at such a rate as to keep the metal level constant. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, states also that the diameter of the tube restriction is less than one-half, e.g. one-third of the diameter of the tube bore. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
