Class 100 (1) A sheet delivery mechanism of the kind wherein sheets are delivered forwardly from a printing or like machine to an associated conveyer having grippers for seizing hold of the leading edges of the sheets and conveying them above a stack or pile when they are released is characterized in that means are arranged in association with an endless chain connecting the conveyer with the main machine drive and are operable once every delivery of a sheet or collection of sheets so as to temporarily retard the conveyer prior to release of the sheet or sheets therefrom. As shown the delivery mechanism comprises chains 1 furnished with cam-controlled grippers 2 which seize the leading edges of sheets or collections of sheets, one at a time, and release them over a pile P, the front edges being registered by stops 3. The chains 1 pass over sprocket wheels 4 on a driving shaft 5 to which is also secured a chain wheel 6 around which runs an endless chain 7 driven from a sprocket wheel 8 on a shaft 9 driven from the main machine, e.g. a printing machine 10. The chain 7 also passes over jockey sprocket wheels 15 mounted on either side of a lever 11 freely mounted on the shaft 5. A further sprocket wheel 17 over which the chain 7 passes is fixed on a shaft 16 driven by the chain 7 so that it executes one revolution for each delivery cycle. Secured to the other end of the shaft 16 is a disc 18 to which is eccentrically fitted by a crank pin 19 a rod 20 the other end of which is connected to the lever 11. Thus as the disc 18 is rotated the lever 11 is swung up and down, the upward swing being timed to correspond with the release of the sheets on the pile P and resulting in a retarding of the speed of the conveyer 1. A spring guide pulley 25 is provided to take up slack in the chain.
