Class 28(1) A machine for coating pastries or the like with fondant or the like comprises an open-topped heated mixing tank from which the coating material is pumped to flow means above the tank which delivers it as at least one curtain through which removable wire trays supporting the pastries or the like are carried. Pastries and the like are placed on wire mesh trays 1 which are loaded on to endless chain conveyers 2, 3 supported on sprockets 4 rotated by electric motor 5. Below the conveyer is an open topped tank which is supported on guide elements 6 and consists of a heated water jacket 9 surrounding a fondant receptacle 7, with an agitator 8. Fondant is pumped from receptacle 7 through conduit 12 to flow pan 13 by pump 14. The bottom 15 of flow pan 13 is of inverted V-shape and is spaced from the sides to form two apertures 16 17 from which two curtains 18 19 of fondant descend on to thE moving pastries. Surplus fondant returns to the tank underneath. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, the tank and flow means are in a housing 20 and there are two separate flow pans 13a, 13b. A blower 23 may be provided to blow surplus fondant from the tops of the pastries. The tank, pump &c. may be mounted on a trolley so as to be removable from the housing for cleaning and servicing, Fig. 5 (not shown).
