Abstract

712,109. Soldering: making radiators. BRITTOLL RADIATORS, Ltd., and BYERS, E. V. Sept. 8, 1952 [June 9, 1951], No. 13724/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) A method of soldering the contiguous surfaces of assembled parts of an article consists in maintaining a positive circulation of molten solder in a vessel or dipping bath by means of a pump in order to cause the solder continuously to overflow opposite top edges of the vessel to form a top layer of overflowing solder and moving the article across the top of the vessel so that the lower part only of the article is moved through the said overflowing layer in the plane thereof. Molten solder overflows the longitudinal edges 7 of a bath 2, into an outer container 1, is pumped therefrom by a pump 5 into a well 10 where its head is adjusted by vertical adjustment of a plate 13 and then passes into the bath 2 through perforated pipes 11, the overflow being maintained at a desired height above the edges by adjustment of the pumping rate. A radiator cooling element comprises gills 18, Fig. 5, pierced by flat tubes 19 with longitudinal lapped seams 20, collars 21 being bent up to lie along the tubes. The radiator is traversed across the bath, Fig. 6, solder reaching those joint surfaces not dipping into the solder by capillary attraction. The traversing of the work may be effected by a motor driven screw device. In a modification, apertures are provided in the end walls 6 below the level of the overflow edges. If a long article is fed intermittently over the apparatus so as to allow successive sections to be subjected to manufacturing &c. processes, while stationary, the pump may be stopped when the article comes to rest and the level of solder in the bath 2 will fall below the overflow edges and out of contact with the article.
