Classes 38(3) and 38(5) A device controlling the intermittent energization of a main electric motor comprises a shaft E which carries similar cams J, K, and is driven by a pilot motor through shaft D, chain F, and sprockets G, H. The cam J co-operates with diametrically disposed contact-operating levers (one of which is shown at M) mounted on the casing of the device, whilst the cam K co-operates with another pair of diametrically disposed contactlevers, such as the lever N, mounted with their contacts on a plate P rotatable with spindle R by means of handwheel S. The movable contacts are connected to the motor circuit through slip-rings T and brushes U. When the levers M, N, are aligned their contacts operate in unison so as to close for one half of a revolution of spindle E and open for the other half. The lever N may be moved so that its contact closes in advance of that of the lever M and opens earlier, the period during which both contacts are closed being reduced and the speed of the main motor decreased. The levers diametrically opposed to the levers M, N, are operated half a revolution behind the latter, and their contacts are connected in series with each other and in parallel with the contacts of levers M, N, so that the main motor will be energized twice during a revolution of the spindle E. Thus, adjustment from a condition of continuous energization of the main motor when each pair of contacts are aligned, to a condition of zero entergization when the pair of contacts are 180 degrees apart, is possible. When the controlled motor drives a chain-grate stoker of a boiler, the spindle R may be coupled to a fan speed regulating means, and the levers co-operating with the cam J made manually adjustable, Fig. 6 (not shown).
