Abstract
711,937. Reciprocating pumps. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. May 8, 1953 [June 20, 1952], No. 15647/52. Class 102 (1). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a lubricating system for the chassis of articulated vehicles of the kind which employs a mechanically-operated periodically-actuated lubricating pump for the chassis of the tractor vehicle and a fluidpressure or vacuum-operated lubricating pump for the chassis of the trailer vehicle, a valve device is operable by the tractor lubricating pump for controlling the application of fluid pressure or vacuum to the trailer lubricating pump so as to effect automatic and periodic actuation thereof. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a mechanically-operated pump 1 and a vacuumoperated pump 2 are mounted on the chassis 3, 4 of tractor and trailer vehicles, respectively, and are arranged to deliver measured quantities of lubricant periodically to points on the respective chassis. The pump 1 is driven from the transmission shaft 5 of the tractor by belt and pulleys and the pump 2 is operated by vacuum from a reservoir 7. Piping 8 connects the pump 2 to the reservoir 7 and to a valve device 10, Fig. 3, comprising a casing 12 formed with chambers 13, 14. Slidable in the chamber 13 is the head 18 of a plunger 17 the stem 16 of which is hollow and extends into the chamber 14. The stem has transverse.ports 20 connecting the inside of the stem with the chamber 13 and with atmosphere through a port 19. The chamber 14 is provided with a valve member 27 having at one end a rubber face 26 and at the other end being in communication with a port 22 adapted to be connected to the vacuum reservoir 7. Beyond the rubber valve-face 26 is a passage communicating with a port 24 adapted to be connected to the cylinder of the vacuum pump 2. With the valve device in the position shown in which the head 18 has been pressed inwardly, the vacuum pump is connected through passage 24, a clearance 28 around the end of the valve member 27, transverse ports 29 in the member, and port 22 to the vacuum reservoir. When the head 18 is relieved of inward pressure it is pressed outwardly by a spring 31 drawing the stem 16 away from the end face 28 of the valve member 27 which is pressed against a valve seat 25. This cuts off the vacuum reservoir 7 from the cylinder of the pump 2 and the cylinder is connected to atmosphere through the port 24, annular passage 23, the hollow stem 16, transverse ports 20 and port 19. Reciprocation of the valve plunger 17 therefore effects reciprocation of the trailer pump 2. The plunger is reciprocated by means of the tractor pump which is provided with a worm 44 and a worm-wheel 43, one side of the worm-wheel having a face-cam 48 which engages a roller 49 carried by a pivoted arm 50 bearing against the head 18. The other side of the wormwheel has a similar face-cam 45 which actuates through a roller 46 and a pivoted arm 47 the plunger 34 of the tractor pump, whereby a measured quantity of lubricant is discharged through a passage 35 into one of a series of conduits 36 leading to lubricating points on the chassis. Rotation of the shaft 42 of the worm wheel is utilised to operate ratchet and pawl mechanism whereby a rotary distributor 37 is indexed round step by step to effect the discharge of lubricant in succession through the conduits 36. Specifications 480.978 and 570,783 are referred to.
