711,825. Preventing inductive disturbance. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1953 [Feb. 22, 1952], No. 4731/52. Class 40 (4) In a communication system wherein a frequency multiplex system transmitting a carrier frequency and two sidebands in respect of each channel is operated over each of a number of adjacent communication circuits, and the same series of carrier frequencies is employed over each, means are provided for adjusting the phases of the carrier waves transmitted over the respective circuits so that at least one of the stations of the system (terminal or repeater) the phases of the carrier waves on the respective circuits are substantially the same. This adjustment ensures that sidebands induced in adjacent circuits are substantially 90 degrees out of phase with the carrier frequency on that line and cross-talk is in consequence a minimum. Phase shifters 13-15, 28-30, 43-45, Fig. 1, provide adjustment of the phase of the currents supplied by oscillators 1-3 to modulators 7-9, 22-24, 37-39. They may be set to produce carriers of similar phase at the transmission terminals, or the phase measuring device described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown) may be used at any point along the transmission path to arrange for adjustment of the phase shifters at the terminal stations to produce phase equality at that point. Circuit 2 is terminated at a branch station 97, Fig. 4, some distance from the main route and the carriers are used to synchronize the oscillators 105-107 of a transmitter 99 working to the right-hand terminal. Phase shifters 108-110 are provided to give identity of carrier phase at the outputs of main line repeaters 94, 95. Equalization of the velocities of propagation over the various circuits by means of adjustable delay networks as a preliminary to. phase adjustment is also described and a suitable delay network is described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown).
