Abstract

711,693. Winch clutches. PRIESTMAN BROS. Ltd. Feb. 15, 1951 [March 9, 1950], No. 5984/50. Class 78 (5) A grab crane is provided with two winding drums 1, 5 of equal diameter intended respectively for the closing and hoisting and for the opening and holding ropes and being mounted in line so that they may rotate independently of each other about the same axis, and a clutch 15 to connect the winding drums directly together so that they may be rotated together at the same speed about the said axis. Twin drums 1 (Fig. 1), freely mounted on shaft 3 are driven from motor 7 though chain 8, pinion 9 and spur wheel 10 secured to drums 1. Drums 5 and 6 secured to shaft 3 are driven from motor 11 through chain 12, pinion 13 and spur wheel 14 fixed to drum 5. Drums 1 and 5 may be interconnected through clutch 15. To shaft 3 (Fig. 2) is keyed spider 21 which carries clutch band 16 embracing extension 18 of drum 1, one end of said clutch band being pivoted at 20 to said spider and the other end of said clutch band being adjustably secured at 23 to arm 24, and said arm 24 being pivoted at 25 to the spider and being rigidly connected to arm 26 which is resiliently biassed at 27 and forms the means of operating the clutch band Arm 26, in turn, is operated by a foot pedal or solenoid 46 through crank arm 45, shaft 44. arm 43 and brake band 40, the latter being fixed at 41 and passing round brake drum 39, and the latter drum being freely rotatable on shaft 3 and carrying opposite lugs 36, 37 which operate said arm 26 through pin-and-slot means. Thus solenoid or pedal 46 causes brake band 40 to slow down brake drum 39 rotating with spider 21 at the speed of shaft 3. This relative rotation between brake drum and spider causes movement of lugs 36, 37 to swing arm 26 clockwise about 25 so that the clutch band. 16, usually slack, is tightened and drums 1 are clutched to shaft 3 and therefore to drums 5 and 6. In this way all four drums .are driven from either motor. Spider 21 is formed with adjustable pads which locate the clutch band. Specifications 264,327, [Class 80 (ii)], and 536,952 are referred to.
