Abstract

A compounding ingredient for rubber is made by condensing (1) a polycarboxylic acid or an anhydride or chloride thereof (2) an ester of a hydroxy aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having at least 10 carbon atoms in the acid component and (3) a phenol. Specified for reactant (1) are oxalyl chloride, succinic acid or anhydride, alkyl or alkenyl succinic acids, fumaric acid, maleic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, aconitic anhydride, adipic acid, sebacic acid, phthalic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, terephthalic acid and naphthalic acid, for reactant (2) castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil, and the alkyl, glycol or glycerol esters of 11- hydroxy undecanoic, 9- or 12- hydroxystearic, 9, 12- dihydroxy-stearic, ricinoleic or ricinelaidic acids or of the hydroxy acids obtained by oxidizing paraffin wax, for reactant (3) phenol, the cresols, the xylenols, allyl phenol, benzyl phenol, 1- and 2-naphthol, phydroxydiphenyl, salicylic acid, cresotic acids, pyrocatechol and its homologues, resorcinol, hydroquinone, pyrogallol and the phenols resulting from the low temperature carbonization of coal, lignite, peat or wood. Equivalent quantities of acid and hydroxyl groups, or a slight excess of the latter are employed. Condensation temperatures are 20-100 DEG C. when acid chlorides are used and 100-300 DEG C. when acids or anhydrides are used. Examples describe the condensation of castor oil and maleic anhydride with, (1)-(4) coal tar fractions boiling at 212 DEG -228 DEG C., 288 DEG -315 DEG C., and 250-400 DEG C.; (6) pyrocatechol; (7) salicylic acid; and (8) hydroquinone. In example (5) a mixture of castor oil, pure phenol and succinic anhydride is condensed. The products are compounded with a mixture of rubber, stearic acid, zinc oxide, channel black, sulphur, "Ureka" (Registered Trade Mark), White and polymerized trimethyldihydroquinoline (see Group V).ALSO:A compounding ingredient for natural and synthetic rubbers imparting improved age resistance to the vulcanizates, improving the tack of rubber compositions, modifying their plasticity, imparting shape stability to the uncured compounds and generally aiding milling, calendering and extrusion operations is made by condensing (1) a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride or chloride thereof; (2) an ester of a hydroxy aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having at least 10 carbon atoms in the acid component (especially castor oil) and (3) a phenol. The Specification contains a list of reactants and eight examples of condensation reactions, (see Group IV (a)). The condensates are compounded with rubber in a mix comprising also stearic acid, zinc oxide, carbon black, sulphur, polymerized trimethyldihydroquinoline and as accelerator "Ureka" (Registered Trade Mark) White. The mix is cured in a press at 153 DEG C. and either aged in an oven at 70 DEG C. for ten days or subjected to oxygen ageing for five days at 300 lbs./sq. in.
