Abstract
Esters of ethylenically unsaturated polycarboxylic acids are copolymerized with low molecular weight copolymerizable monomeric materials by heating in the presence of a peroxide catalyst and an inert diluent, preferably a hydrocarbon oil, the temperature being maintained by injecting oxygen or a gas mixture containing molecular oxygen, such as air, into the reaction mixture. The polycarboxylic acid esters may be derived from maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic or aconitic acids which are preferably esterified with the alcohols obtained by the hydrogenation of coconut oil and having an average chain length of 13.5 carbon atoms. The copolymerizable monomeric material may be vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, isopropenyl acetate, alphachlorovinyl acetate, styrene, alphamethyl styrene, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. The catalyst may be hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide, potassium persulphate, lauroyl peroxide, ammonium persulphate, urea hydroperoxide, tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide or tertiary-butyl perbenzoate. The copolymers may be used as lubricating oil additives.ALSO:Mineral lubricating oil compositions contain from 0.001 per cent. to 10 per cent. of a copolymer of an ester of an ethylenically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid with a low molecular weight copolymerizable monomeric material (see Group IV (a)) which acts both as pour depressant and viscosity index improver. The composition may contain other materials such as extreme pressure agents, oxidation inhibitors, other pour depressants, other viscosity index improvers, oiliness agents and corrosion inhibitors. The use of the copolymer of a maleate ester of the alcohols obtained upon the hydrogenation of coconut oil with vinyl acetate is exemplified.
