Abstract
710,510. Centrifugal separators. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 2, 1952 [Sept. 17, 1951; Sept. 17, 1951], Nos. 21769/51 and 21770/51. Class 23 A rotor in a centrifugal filter for oil or other liquid is adapted to rotate on a vertical tube through which the liquid under pressure is fed into the rotor, the filtered liquid being discharged through one or more reaction nozzles for driving the rotor solely by reaction, and the rotor is characterized in that at least the body part is made of thin metal to provide a lightweight disposable unit. The rotor, which may be made from tinplate having a thickness of 0.011 in. with a tin coating of 0.00006 in on each side, comprises a cylindrical wall 1 (Fig. 1), having a rolled and soldered longitudinal seam 3, top and bottom members 4, 5 respectively united with the wall by means of rolled seams 6 with sealing compound, and a helically wound reinforcing wire 11 soldered at its ends to the rotor. A centrally disposed inlet tube 7, sweated at its ends to the members 4, 5 and extending downwardly through a hole in the latter, serves to mount the unit rotatably on an external oilpressure pipe. The inlet tube is formed with one or more outlet holes 8, the wall is provided with one or more reaction nozzles 9, and a baffle plate 2, located between said holes and nozzles, is secured peripherally to the wall and has a central hole of greater diameter than the inlet tube. 'The nozzle is formed by pressing out a part of the wall, and the orifice may be formed by shearing. Alternatively, the excrescence may be blind and pierced to form the orifice. The plate 2 may be replaced by baffle means associated with the nozzle and comprising an inwardly extending preferably tapered tube. In a further modification the nozzle comprises a radially disposed tube projecting partly within and partly outside the rotor unit, the outwardly projecting end being blind and being provided with an orifice in its wall. The unit may be made wholly or in part of aluminium or aluminium alloy. In Fig. 6, the unit is installed within the crankcase 25 of an internal combustion engine, being mounted on an oil pressure pipe 19 extending upwardly from the sump 21. The unit rests on a flange 20 when stationary and rotates on a ball 26 disposed under a removable cover 24 of the crankcase. The unit may be installed within an oil-filter tube projecting from the crankcase, or it may be submerged within the sump, a bridge member then being provided for preventing the unit rising on its tubular spindle.
