710,455. Feeding webs. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. March 7, 1952 [March 7, 1951], No. 6053/52. Addition to 709,212. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group VIII] A feed roll as set out in the parent Specification is characterized in that a rim member is resiliently supported by an annulus of resilient material or by a series of solid blocks. As shown in Fig. 1 a rubber annulus 35 is perforated by holes 36, 37 which vary in size to cause the annulus to yield with a resistance which varies according to variations in thickness of the advancing strip. The holes may be of equal size but spaced at varying distances apart or slots of equal size together with holes of equal size may be provided. The annulus may have portions removed so as to free sections of the rim member from direct support by the annulus and the portions removed may be of sector or segmental shape. As shown in Fig. 5 solid blocks of rubber 27c, 28c are spaced around the axis of the roll and are divided into two groups of different length, the blocks 27c being longer than the blocks 28c. The blocks may be of the same length but of different degrees of hardness. Alternatively two blocks in the form of sectors of an annulus may be provided.
