710,373. Determining physical qualities of materials. LANTSON, Ltd. Sept. 24, 1951, [Oct. 27, 1950.] No. 22278/51. Class 37. A substance is identified, or the proportions of two substances in a mixture determined, by subjecting a standard volume to electromagnetic waves at radio frequency and determining the resonant frequency or the energy absorption at the resonant frequency. A wave generator 1 Fig. 2 feeds valves 7, 8 whose outputs comprise condensers 22, 23 and radiating inductances 16, 17, coupled to inductances 24, 25, feeding detectors 26, 27 and an instrument 44 or amplifier 4<SP>1</SP>. The substance under test is placed in containers 2, 3 in fixed location .to the radiators 16, 17. It is found that as the frequency of generator 1 is varied the response of the meter shows a minimum at one frequency, the frequency of this minimum depending on the quantity of the substance, and its nature; the depth of this minimum is found to vary with the nature of the substance. Thus, if the quantity is kept constant, a pure substance can be identified by its resonant frequency, and the proportions of a mixture determined either by its resonant frequency or by the depth of the minimum, i.e. its absorption. The containers may have the substance under test following through them. One container alone may be used. The contents of one container may be kept constant.
