Abstract
710,263. Automatically regulating clutch slip. TIMSONS, Ltd., and TIMSON, E. A. Jan. 2, 1952 ' [Jan. 31, 1951], No. 2432/51. Addition to 680.331, [Group XVI]. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XVI] A web-winding mechanism comprises a pair of coaxially-mounted fraction disc elements constituting a friction clutch, viz. (a) a driven element rigidly secured to a rotary member mounted in bearings in a fixed part of the mechanism and adapted to drive the webwinding member, and (b) an externally driven element mounted on a part of the rotary member for rotation, relatively thereto, a hingedlymounted web-engaging roller or the like, a mechanical link and lever system for converting the hinging movement of the roller or the like into an axial force exerted on the driving element, and a spring means forming, a flexible part of this system. A web 1, Fig. 1, engages a roller 5 pivotally mounted by arms 10 on a shaft 11, one arm 10 being connected to a link 15 operating a bell-crank lever 16 having forked portions 18. Links 19, hinged to the portions 18, carry a block 20 slidable on a rod 21 screwed in an upright 23 and rotatable by a knob 24. A spring 27 is interposed between the block 20 and an abutment 25 secured on the rod, while a further spring 28 bears on the opposite side of the block 20 and a slidable member 29 pivotally connecting the sides of a lever 30. The lever 30, rockable on a pin 31, engages, through a cross pin 33, a thrust rod 34 secured to a cap 45 carrying a clutch driving element 39 driven through a sprocket 48. The element 39 is rotatably mounted by a roller bearing 42 on a hollow shaft 36 supported by ball races 37 in the upright 23. A friction lining 49 is interposed between the element 39 and driven element 40 keyed to the shaft 36, the element 40 carrying a spurwheel 50 driving a web winding shaft (not shown). When the web tension varies, the roller 5 causes rocking of the arms 10, bell-crank lever 16, and lever 30, thus moving, through the rod 34, the elements 39 and 40 towards or away from each other,: thus, decreasing or increasing the clutch slip to vary the winding speed accordingly. In a modification, Fig. 4, a web-engaging roller 60 rocks a pair of arms 65 mounted on a shaft 66 carrying a two-armed lever, one end 71 being attached to a spring 72. whdle the other end (not shown) is attached to a counterbalance spring attached to an adjustable spindle. The spring 72 is connected to a bell-crank lever 73 which actuates clutch plates 80 and 86 having an interposed lining 87. The plate 80, driven by a sprocket is rota'table on a shaft 83, while the plate 86 is keyed to the shaft 83. The shaft 83 has a socket 90 for receiving projecting pins 91 and 93 on the end of a winding shaft 63.
