Class 94'(1) [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for emptying crates and like containers of articles such as crown corks and the like trapped in them, said containers having openings in their sides and tops, comprises a series of three or more steps and a conveyer or conveyers for urging the crates over the steps so that each crate tips over successive steps, performs a quarter turn or approximately so at each tipping and receives a jolt at about the termination of each quarter turn. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 the crates are first conveyed on a pair of endless chains 2, 2 passing round sprockets 3, 4 to a stop 36 where they remain until one of a number of pusher bars 21 connected to a pair of endless chains 15 passing round sprockets 16, 17, 18, 19 are in a position to receive the back face of a crate after it has tipped over a roller 37. Such tipping is effected by rollers 34 at the ends of the preceding bar 21 engaging cams 33 on plates 32 depending from rails 12 which serve as guides for the crates on the chains 2, 2. These rails 12 are supported by channels 11 which serve as guides for the chains and form part of the framework 7 on which are supported the shafts 5 of the sprocket wheels 3, 4. When the rollers 34 engage the cams, the frame 7 is tipped in an anti-clockwise direction about a shaft 8 so as to lift the bottom front edge of the orate clear of the stop 36. The orate is thereupon fed forward by the chains 2 assisted by a roller 37 driven clockwise from the shaft of the sprocket wheel 16 by chain-and-sprocket gearing 38. The crate tips over the roller and is caught end-on by track rails 13. Any corks falling from the crate are caught by a tray 43. The tray is now carried forward by a pusher bar 21 and tips over a step 14 ism the rails 13 to be jolted and further emptied and is later tipped over a roller 40 to rest on rails 13a, any loose bodies therein falling into a tray 44. A pusher bar 21a on a pair of endless chains 15a then feeds the crate over a step 14a and finally raises it to a delivery point The conveyers are driven in series through chain-and-sprocket gearing by a motor 25. In a modification, Fig. 3, the crate is delivered over the roller 40 to a washer 45 trough which the crate is conveyed by an endless conveyer 46 and then tipped over a roller 47 to a track 13a. The steps may be formed by the top flight of a single endless conveyer being suitably guided over rollers.
