Abstract

A sole and a hollow heel are made in one piece by placing a suspension of leather fibres in a liquid vehicle, e.g. water, into an accretion die, accreting fibres from the suspension to form a layer of fibres, removing the blank so formed from the die, drying it and pressing it in a final shaping die. The pressure in the final shaping die may be applied by apparatus including a hollow resilient member which expands the hollow heel to its final shape. After formation of the blank by accretion, and before it is removed from the accretion die, a portion of the blank may be shielded, a second suspension introduced into the die, and an additional layer of fibres accreted on to the first layer: or this additional layer may be added in another accretion die. Before final shaping, colouring matter or graining may be applied to the blank. After final shaping the hollow heel may be filled with wooden composition or other filler. The suspension of leather fibres may contain rubber latex, synthetic resins, wax &c. Other shoe parts may be secured by sewing, nailing, cementing &c.
