Class 19 A device for wiping the dip-stick used for checking the oil level in a container such as the sump of an internal combustion engine comprises a vessel closed at one end and open at the other and through which open end the dip-stick to be cleared is inserted into the vessel, said open end of the tube having a wiper in the form of a substantially axially bored body of felt or like material enclosed therein so that on insertion of a dip-stick into the vessel, the dip-stick passes substantially axially through the wiper which removes the adhering oil, the oil collecting in the vessel, an abutment inside the vessel acting as a stop or seating for the inner end of the wiper body the outer end of the wiper body being adjacent to the open end of the vessel. In Fig. 1 a metal tube 1 is closed at its lower end 2 and a metal disc 4 with a hole large enough to admit the dip-stick is seated on an annular shoulder 3 which supports a wiper sleeve of felt or similar material 6 of internal diameter less than that of the dip-stick and a further centrally perforated disc 7. The discs and sleeve are held in place by a screw cap 9. In Fig. 4 the sleeve 6 is replaced by a number of felt discs 12 formed with radial cuts shown at 13 in Fig. 6 which form tongues of material which yield when the dip-stick is pushed through hole 8. The disc 7 may be rigid and formed with radial channels 15 down which oil dropping on the disc 7 from the dip-stick may drain into the tube 1. In Figs. 3 and 4 accompanying the Provisional Specification (not shown) the wiper element comprises a felt insert similar to the discs 12 above with incisions only.
