Abstract

A sprayable coating composition comprises a solution, in a volatile organic solvent such as toluene or xylene, of a solid polymeric alkyl or glycol ester of methacrylic acid whose alcohol residue contains up to four carbon atoms, the webbing characteristic of which has been reduced by subjecting the solid polymeric ester in the form of a heavy paste to a severe mechanical shearing and kneading action, preferably at a temperature of 60 DEG to 300 DEG F. for a period of between 5 and 120 minutes. Preferred polymers are those with an initial molecular weight of between 10,000 and 1,000,000 derived from the methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol esters of methacrylic acid, and mixtures thereof. The mechanical treatment of the polymer may be carried out in the presence of a solvent such as toluene or xylene, a plasticizer such as dibutyl phthalate, and a pigment such as titanium dioxide, the amounts of these materials used being greater in the case of the more brittle polymers, in order to render the milling process easier. The coating compositions may also contain hard alkyd resins or nitrocellulose.
