Abstract
Crude trimethylol-propane, obtained by the action of formaldehyde on butyraldehyde in the presence of milk of lime or caustic alkali solution, is purified by heating it, before or after distillation, if desired with water or steam, for several hours to temperatures above 120 DEG C. under conditions under which pure trimethylolpropane remains undecomposed and undistilled. In the examples, crude trimethylolpropane is purified by (a) heating the anhydrous material for several hours to 200 DEG C. at a pressure of 200 torr; (b) heating an aqueous solution to 250 DEG C., cooling and reheating; (c) heating to 130 DEG C. in the presence of steam and steam distilling at reduced pressure; (d) steam distilling the crude material and heating the distillate to 130 DEG C. in the presence of steam; and (e) heating the anhydrous material at 200 DEG C. under a pressure of 100 torr for some hours, passing steam through at atmospheric pressure at a temperature of 130 DEG to 150 DEG C. and steam distilling the resultant mixture.
