Abstract

709,387. Pneumatic tyres. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. May 23, 1952 [June 21, 1951], No. 13088/52. Class 144(1) [Also in Group V] The outer rubber covering of a tyre casing is moulded under heat and pressure and then applied to a raw tyre carcass. Bands of rubber 30. 31 formed by extrusion are placed on upper and lower surfaces of a core 17 which is then lowered into a mould half 10. The upper mould half is moved down by a hydraulic piston 14 and the bands moulded under heat and pressure. The bands, core and mould halves may be heated. Cooling fluid is then circulated through passages 40, 41 or preferably instead of cooling, the core may be rotated by a gear 45 to counteract any shrinkage stresses in the rubber as is described in Specification 709,378, [Group V]. The mould is opened and the core removed, the moulded bands adhering to the mould walls. A raw tyre carcass 47, Fig. 4, having sidewall strips 70, 71 is placed between bead flanges 56, 48, Fig. 5. The piston 14 is operated to lower the mould half 12 and simultaneously hydraulic fluid is allowed to bleed from a cylinder 58 to allow the flange 56 to slide up into the top mould half, and the piston 49 is lowered to bring the flange 48 into the lower mould half. The bands are then moulded under heat and pressure on to the tyre carcass to produce a raw tyre casing as shown in Fig. 7. Internal pressure is applied to the interior of the casing through a passageway 64. The finished tyre casing may be formed into a finished tyre in a vulcanizing press of the type described in U.S.A. Specification 2,495,664.
