[Also in Group XI] A gas-shielded arc welding torch has a hollow head H with a gas inlet duct 17 and cooling fluid inlet and outlet ducts 24,' 22. Cooling water passes from the duct 24 through a passage 20 in the head to an annular cooling chamber W formed by a space between an inner wall part of the head H and an outer wall part 57 of the electrode holder B detachably threaded to the head, the ends of the cooling chamber W being closed by compressible sealing rings. A copper gas nozzle N is threaded on to the lower end of the part 57 and is insulated from the head H. The bottom surface of the cooling chamber W is formed and sealed by a compressible annular washer 54 seating on a shoulder of a bronze annulus 57 threaded on to an insulating sleeve 58 itself threaded on to a part 21 of the metal head H. The electrode E is gripped by a collet 45 within a copper sleeve 35 axially supported in the head H. The sleeve 35 has an internal conical seat below the cooling chamber co-operating with a split conical end 44 of the collet 45 when axial pressure is exerted on the collet by an electrode 48 threaded in the upper part of the head. The axial bore 12 of a hollow metal insert 10 of the head H has opposite grooves 19, 20 opening into an enlarged bore in the upper part of the head, into which extends the upper part of the sleeve 35 ; and the openings of the grooves in the bore are sealed by a compressible ring 37 surrounding the upper part of the sleeve 35. The ring 37 rests on a metal washer 38 on a shoulder of the insert 10 and is compressed by an internally broached cap nut 40 threaded into the enlarged bore 16 of the inset 10. A compressible ring 60 in an internal annular groove in the upper end of the jacket 57 seals against the insulating sleeve 58. The gas inlet duct 17 terminates in the inner wall of the bore 16 above the ring 37 and communicates with the copper nozzle N through an annular space between the sleeve 35 and the collett 45. The bronze head H is connected at an angle to an insulating shank 30 containing the water and gas pipes. A tubular insulating handle preferably of nylon is threaded on to the shank 30. The cable passes through and is connected to the metal water outlet pipe 27, which is soldered to the head insert 10. An annular washer 52 seals the joint between the cap 48 and the head H.
