Abstract

708,485. Hedge clippers. LANCASTER, G. H. Dec. 15. 1952 [May 3, 1952]. No. 11239/52. Class 131 Shears for trimming hedges &c. comprise a frame on which two cutter bars are slidably mounted and guided for reciprocation in opposite directions by operating levers connected at their ends to the bars and pivotally interconnected intermediate their ends. As shown, cutter bars 2, 3 are each formed with registering slots 4a through which screw-threaded studs 4 on arms 5 of a U-shape frame 1 extend, a coiled compression spring between the nut and the adjacent bar pressing the bars into contact with each other and towards the arm 5, operating levers 8 pivot on a pin 16 carried by a strap 10 secured to the frame 1 and are slotted at 11 to slidably engage studs 12 on lugs 7 provided on each bar. Oppositely arranged anti-spreading tongues 14, 15 are secured to the bars and to the strap 10 respectively and links 17 pivotally mounted on the levers 8 and on a pin slidable in a slot 18 in the strap 10 prevent swivelling of the frame on the studs 12. The pressure between the cutter bars is varied by a nut on a screw-threaded bolt 15a. The blades 13 have a cutting edge at both sides and are more numerous on one cutting bar than on the other being arranged so that they will come into operation successively.
