Class 87 (2) A tile press comprises a mould 10, an upper pressing die 3 carried by a vertically-reciprocating ram 1, and a lower die 11 secured to a tileejecting rod 12. A pair of spaced parallel tie rods 4 are secured to the ram and extend downwardly through the press table 5, these rods carrying at their lower ends a crosshead 7 provided with means for lifting the rod 12 and with a vertically-disposed toothed rack 37 which engages toothed gearing 46 ... 49 adapted to actuate rocking levers 51 connected with the filling slide 38 for imparting the required horizontal reciprocating movement to the .slide. Thus, as the ram ascends after pressing a tile it lifts the crosshead 7 by way of rods 4, and thereby lifts rod 12 and lower die 11 to eject the pressed tile, and at the same time the rack 37 is lifted to move the slide 38 to the left, Fig. 2, to push off the pressed tile and fill the mould. The ejecting rod 12 is slidably mounted in crosshead 7 and carries rollers 17 which rest on levers 22 fulcrummed on a fixed shaft 23. Levers 21 also are fulcrummed on shaft 23 and are clutched by their hubs, at 25, to the hubs of levers 22. When the ram 1 begins to rise the levers are clutched together, springs 26 keeping the clutches in engagement, and rollers 18 mounted on the crosshead tilt the locked levers counterclockwise, Fig. 2, about 23, so that levers 22 raise rod 12; but when the filling slide is above the mould, a wedge 28 on the crosshead forces apart levers 21 (Fig. 1), so disengaging the clutches, whereupon the levers 22, rod 12 and die 11 fall to their lowermost position, thus allowing the filling material to fall into the mould. When the ram descends the levers resume their clutched position. The rod 12 is in two parts secured together by screw 14, whereby one part may be withdrawn upwardly and' one downwardly. To vary the thickness of the tile being pressed, the plate 24 which supports levers 20, 22 may be raised or lowered. The slide 38 moves on ball bearings which run in V-ways in a base 40 supported by a post 41 vertically adjustable in table 5. When the dies are to be cleaned or repaired, the ram is raised above its normal uppermost position, and this excess movement disengages a clutch on shaft 50, so that the slide may be withdrawn. Buffers 59 absorb the impact of the returning slide.
