Class 68(1) In a method of mining, the coal at the lower part of a seam is freed by making in said part a number of narrow upwardly extending cuts, removing the freed coal on to a. face conveyer, and subsequently moving the conveyer into the mined out space so as to be overhung by the upper part of the seam. The apparatus for cutting out the lower part of the seam may be arranged to work in one or both directions along the face, and in the former case it consists of a cutter capable of forming a number of narrow upwardly extending cuts, the cutter preceding a loading means which, in turn, precedes the motor for driving the cutter. In one embodiment the apparatus comprises a cable hauled frame having an arm 7 extending parallel to and disposed outwards of the face, and on said arm is mounted a drum cutter 11 to the rear of which is positioned a ramp 13 which guides the disintegrated coal upwardly and sideways over the motor casing 6 on to a conveyer 3. A drum cutter and ramp are provided at each end of the machine. In a second embodiment the drive from the motor to the drum is by the pick-carrying chain of a shearing jib disposed inwards of the face of the seam. The disintegrated material is loaded by the paddles of a scraper conveyer circulating around an inclined triangular framework.
