Abstract

A cosmetic cream for application to dark complexions comprises a matured aqueous emulsion prepared from a major proportion of a non-drying animal, vegetable or mineral oil or fat, or a mixture thereof, and minor proportions of an oil-soluble emulsifying agent and a mucilaginous substance obtained by alkaline digestion of a pectocellulose or mucocellulose. Specified oils and fats are lard, lard oil, hydrogenated fish oil, almond oil, olive oil, palm nut oil, palm kernel oil, arachis oil, hazel nut oil, cottonseed oil, rape seed oil, and petroleum oil. Emulsifiers are partial esters of polyhydric alcohols with fatty acids containing at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule e.g. glycol mono-oleate or monostearate, glyceryl mono oleate, glyceryl di-oleate, glyceryl monostearate, glyceryl distearate, glyceryl mono- and di-palmitate, and fatty alcohol containing at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule e.g. cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, lanolin and lanolin alcohols. Alternatively, the animal or vegetable oil may be partially hydrolyzed with e.g. dilute hydrochloric acid, and the emulsion so formed used without further addition of emulsifier. The mucilage is prepared by digesting the rind of citrus fruits e.g. orange, lemon or grape-fruit, or commercial pectin with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate e.g. by boiling 2 to 5 hours. Other vegetable tissues which may be used are e.g. apples, pears, grapes, sugar beet, carrots, turnips, flax and rhamie fibre. The mixture of oil-emulsion and mucilage is allowed to age e.g. 2 to 3 weeks, is mixed with further oil-emulsion and again aged until the desired dark colour is produced. Optional additions are (a) glycerin, (b) preservatives, (c) perfumes, (d) antioxidants, (e) pigments, (f) waxes and (g) medicines e.g. estrogenic hormones, vitamin D, cholesterol, sulphur, boric acid and zinc oxide.
