Class 87 (2) In making capsules by a method that includes the step of sucking a gelatin &c. sheet into the cavities of a die roll, the waste part of the sheet, i.e. that part of,the sheet that is not sucked into the cavities, also is sucked on to the surface of the die roll to keep it still. Figs. 1 and 2 show a die roll 11 having staggered cavity-forming inserts 12 fitted into slots 13. Through the bottom of each insert extend two capsuleejecting pistons 18 disposed in cylinders 16 connected by manifold 19 to vacuum chest 22. The vacuum is applied to the underside of the gelatin sheet 15 through the gaps between the pistons and the contiguous die roll parts, and sucks the sheet into the cavity, as shown. At the same time the parts 15<1> of the gelatin sheet that lie outside the cavities are sucked onto the surface of the die roll by vacuum through passages 24 formed in the walls of the slots 13. The cavities may be circular in shape. The vacuum may be appliedto only certain parts, of the waste (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification (not illustrated) independent passages may extend from the manifold 19 to the surface of the die roll beneath parts 15' of the sheet. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the two suction supplies, are separate from each other viz., one to the cavities via manifold 19 and one to the parts 15<1> by passages 26. The vacuum line 23 that serves the cavities is separate from the vacuum line 28 that serves the waste parts 15<1>, and the waste may be sucked on to the roll before, whilst or after the sheet is sucked into the cavities.
