Abstract
706,797. Centrifugaland screw pumps, LAING, N. Sept. 3. 1951 [Sept. 13, 1950; Aug. 6, 1951], No. 20715/51. Class 110 (1). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXV] A portable electrically-driven pump comprises a tubular body the lower end of which can be inserted into a barrel or other narrow-necked container, the tubular body having an inlet at or near its lower end and an outlet near its upper end, a pump rotor being housed within the tubular body just above the inlet and the driving motor being enclosed in the tubular body or in a casing forming a continuation thereof. The pump shown in Fig. 3 comprises a main impeller 16 directly driven by a motor 19 and an auxiliary impeller 14 driven through a conical clutch member 22, Fig. 4, which engages a conical seat 21 formed on the impeller 16. When the pump is started, the impeller 14 is driven through the clutch until the liquid reaches the impeller 16, when the buoyancy of the impeller 14 and its hollow shaft 17, together with the axial thrust due to the pumping action, causes an upward displacement which disengages the clutch and brings a braking surface 25, which may be serrated, against a stationary seat 24. A switch 3 and a carrying handle 1 are provided. The motor may be located between the impellers. A thermal cut-out is preferably provided within the motor to prevent overheating. due to the pump running idle or conveying hot liquid. In an alternative construction, Figs. 7 and 8, a single impeller 37 and its driving motor 36 are contained in an inner cylinder 32 which carries a packing ring 38 and guide members 39 over which is pushed an outer cylinder 310. The pumped liquid flows through the annular space between the cylinders and is discharged through a connection 312. A detachable screen 321 is secured in place by a circlip 320. The handle 31 is in two halves which surround the cylinder 310 and connection 312 and are clamped together by a nut 316, Fig. 10. The impeller may be of the worm type, working within a stator provided internally with helical threads. The pump may be controlled by an annular float surrounding the cylinder 310 and connected by lost motion linkage to the switch. An extension hose 350, Fig. 21, may be connected to the pump. To draw the liquid up to the level of the impeller 37, the discharge pipe 353 is closed by pushing a pipe 355, carried by a flexible diaphragm 354, into a chamber 352 until a plate 356 closes an opening 359. A flexible bulb 358 is then squeezed and released, thus drawing the liquid up the hose 350. A float 361, Fig. 23, carrying a screen 362 and pipe 360, may be screwed into the pump inlet.
