Abstract
706,790. Fishing reels. GRICE, J. B. G. Feb. 1, 1952 [June 6, 1951], No. 13447/51. Class 48 In a fishing reel comprising a circular side. plate 1 secured to the rod and carrying a central spindle 2 on which the spool 3 is removably mounted a lubricant reservoir 8 is formed in the side plate, the reservoir being closed by a removable plug 11 situated on the inside of the side plate and only accessible when the spool has been removed. The side plate is formed by die-casting and the reservoir is formed as a cylindrical hole at casting. The outer end of the hole is permanently closed by a separately formed disc 10 of thin metal or of transparent material. A name plate may be riveted to the disc. The closure plug 11 screws into the other end of the hole and carries a brush for applying lubricant to the reel parts. The spool is retained. on the spindle 2 by a spring-urged pivoted lever 4 disposed in a groove 6 in the spindle 2. A clicker pawl 14 for cooperating with a clicker wheel 13 secured to the inner face of the spool is removably carried on a lever 15 pivoted on a trunnion 16 on the side plate and urged by a spring 17 towards the clicker wheel. The engagement of the pawl with the clicker wheel is controlled by a pivoted finger-lever 18 having in its lower end 18a a roller 20 engaging the clicker lever 15. The fingerlever can be positioned so that its lower end 18a lies at right angles to the clicker lever and in this position the clicker pawl is maintained out of engagement with the clicker wheel. The lever 15, pawl 14 and spring 17 form a removable unit retained on the trunnion 16 by a blade spring 21 which is pivoted to a pin 22 and normally overlies the end of the clicker lever 15. The blade spring also holds a spare clicker-pawl 14a on a post 23. A synthetic resin brake drum 24 is loosely mounted on the spindle and is coupled for rotation with the spool by the heads of two screws 26 on the spool enterin kidney-shaped recesses 25 in the drum. An elongated U-shaped spring 27 has the end of one of its limbs anchored to the pin 22 and its other limb engages the periphery of the brake drum. An eccentric 29 operated by a lever on the outer side of the side plate engages the anchored limb of the spring. The limbs of the spring are separated by a small gap which closes as the eccentric is rotated so that drag is applied in two stages.
