Abstract

706,382. Combined clutch and brake. HOOVER, V. A. July 4, 1952, No. 16856/52. Class 80 (2) An electromagnetically-controlled clutchbrake device comprises a driving shaft 10, to which is secured a driving disc 22, a driven disc 20 on an axially .movable driven shaft 15, a fixed brake disc 21, bearing means, such as bearings 43, 44, supporting the driven shaft, the bearing 43 being axially immovable with respect to the driving shaft and the bearing 44 being axially immovable with respect to the driven shaft, resilient means, such as a compression spring 49, between the bearing means, tending to cause engagement of the driven disc with the brake disc, and magnetic means, such as a stationary coil 30, operable to. move the driven shaft axially against the force of the resilient means to engage the clutch. As shown. the outer race of the bearing 43 is secured to the casing surrounding the device and the driven shaft slides axially within its inner race, while the inner race of the bearing 44 is secured to the driven shaft and its outer race slides in the casing. The parts supporting and surrounding the coil 30 are all made of magnetic material. save for the flange 28 of the coil support and the friction linings 50 on the driven clutch disc, which are both of non-magnetic material, the resulting flux-path of the coil being as shown by the arrows. The friction lining 50 on the clutch disc is formed of tobin bronze sprayed on to the disc 20 in the molten state and machined to the correct size. The central portion of the driving disc 22 is reduced in thickness by the formation of an annular groove 29, which allows the outer portion of the disc to be flexed with respect to the driving shaft and compensates for any slight misalignment of the driving shafts. As shown, the driving shaft 10 is a continuation of the driving shaft of a reversible electric motor and the coil 30 is connected in series with the motor, so that the clutch is automatically engaged when the motor drives.
