Abstract

706,118. Printing surfaces. ELECTROGRAPHIC CORPORATION. April 27, 1951 [Sept. 20, 1950], No. 9982/51. Class 100 (2) Mechanical treatment; electrotypes.-In the making of cylindrically curved electrotypes a plurality of flexible electrotype moulds 20 are formed by pressing a thermoplastic substance 16 against a printing plate 10, registering marks 24 being provided which appear on the moulds. The moulds are then trimmed along their edges and aligned by means of the marks 24 and joined together by strips 36 preferably of the same material as the moulds. The moulds are then positioned within an electrotype case 40 with their design surface facing inwardly. Copper or other metal is then deposited on the moulds electrolytically from an anode 46, the moulds themselves forming the cathode, after having been silvered to make them electrically conducting. After a shell 50 has been deposited on the mould it is separated therefrom and placed on a cylinder 54, having cutting rollers 58 co-operating therewith for trimming the top and bottom edges of the shell. The side edges are then trimmed at right angles to the top and bottom edges and the shell 50 placed in a casting drum 68, driven by rollers 72 against which it is held by a roller 74. The drum is provided with removable rings 78 to prevent the casting metal which is poured into the drum whilst rotating from flowing out. When the casting metal has set, one of the rings 78 is removed and the cylindrical plate formed is removed from the drum 68. The cylinder is then cut along parallel axially extending lines so as to form a number of separate printing plates, each of the plates being finished along each of their four edges.
