Abstract

706,076. Making fan blades. WING MANUFACTURING CO., L. J. Aug. 29, 1950, No. 6981/52. Divided out of 706,018. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2) Making foundry cores; patterns.-A method of making a hollow fan blade comprises forming a pattern of the blade by means of a fixture composed of elements which correspond to the cross-section of the blade and which can be fixed in the required position, making a core and dies from the pattern and then using these to bend and shape a sheet of metal. Assuming that the blade to be formed is of uniform crosssection from the hub to the tip, a pattern 50 of the blade is formed from a number of similar sheet metal sections 14, Fig. 2, each having the shape of the required cross-section and the sections being mounted on a rod 16. The sections are correctly spread by two devices. One of these comprises a fan-like rack 40 formed of uniformly spread ribs 44 pivoted about a pin 46, Fig. 7, and the other comprises two triangular elements 54, 56 mounted in a support 52 so that they are separated by the hub to tip distance of the blade and have angles equal to the angular pitch of the blade at tip and hub. The elements are placed on the rack and the ribs 44 spread so as to contact the undersides of the elements. The surface thus formed by the tops of the ribs is used to give the required spread to the sections 14 by holding the pattern 50 on the surface by hook members 72, 74 engaging the end rib 44 and the ends of the rod 16 as shown in Fig. 1. The sections are then clamped together on the rod 16 and encased in heated wax which is spread to give an even uniform surface. The wax-encased pattern is placed in a moulding box and a material such as plaster of Paris poured in to form mould surfaces from which a core 34 and two dies such as 36 are cast If the blade is to be wider at the base than at the tip, a pattern may be built up as shown in Fig. 5 from sections 15, 17 and 19, spacers 31, a supporting rod 25 and a supporting V-shaped strip 29, the sections being relatively positioned as by using the rack 40. Specification 706,018 is referred to.
