705,760. Refractometers. INGELSTAM, E. Oct. 10, 1951 (Nov. 7, 1950], No. 23583/51. Class 97(1) A refractometer for gaseous and liquid media comprises an optical system including a linear lightentrance slit, a receptacle for receiving and locating the medium to be tested between two portions of a reference medium; the separating boundaries being parallel to the slit, a phase contrast element having a portion on which an image of the slit is formed and by means of which a phase contrast image of the media is produced, the measurements of intensity variations of which give a measure of the refractive index differences between the two media. As shown the receptacle k is found between two plano-convex lenses which image the illuminated slit S on the phase element F. The latter comprises a plate a, Fig. 2, having a non-reflecting coating b on one side and being polished on the other and bearing a metallic film, of thickness e, corresponding to the image of the slit. Alternatively the plate may be coated with metal except in the parts corresponding to the slit image. Light reflected from this plate passes to a lens L forming an image of the receptacle on a screen B which image may be explored by a photographic plate or by a movable photo-multiplicator cell C connected to a recorder R. A graded wedge T may be provided; an image of which is formed on the screen B to allow visual comparisons of light intensities and polarizers P and A may be provided to effect variations of intensity to assist measurement.
