Abstract

<PICT:0705726/III/1> In the continuous melting of fat from animal material with steam under pressure in a rotary sieve drum, mounted with an outlet member in a closed pressure vessel, which prevents undisintegrated raw material from reaching the outflow member of the pressure vessel, the raw material being first comminuted, then pre-heated and thereupon conveyed continuously into the sieve drum by means of a pump, liquid fat is added to the comminuted raw material before charging into the pump. A suitable plant comprises a comminuting machine 1, a receiving vessel 2 with a stirring mechanism 3, a pump 4, a closed boiling vessel 5 having a sieve drum 7 mounted on a rotary shaft 6 therein, and a fat separator 8 with connecting pipes 9, 10 and 11 therebetween enabling the comminuted raw material to be conveyed continuously into the rotating sieve drum by the pump. The receiving vessels 2 may be provided with a steam jacket 12 and, if desired, with a direct steam supply through a valve 13, for pre-heating the raw material. The separator is provided with a cyclone pump 15, a funnel 16, fat outlet valves 17 and 18, an agitator 20 and a valved outlet 19 for withdrawing the broth and solids. The boiling vessel 5 is supplied continuously with steam under pressure through valve 22. In a modified plant the sieve drum 7 is provided with a hollow trunnion connecting with the pump pipe 10 through which the comminuted raw material can be fed into the sieve drum. The process may be used for the treatment of whales on ships.
