Abstract

705,568. Ordnance. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. May 25, 1949 [May 29, 1948], No. 14549/48. Classes 92(1) and 92(2) The angles of the several guns 1 of.a multiple gun mounting with respect to the mean direction of aim are varied, to vary the spread of the projectiles, by a servo mechanism to which relevant variables such as range R, relative speed S of the target, and altitude of the gun-carrying aircraft are automatically supplied by measuring instruments. In the form shown such variables are fed to a computor 12 whose output is fed to a servo motor 11. The latter drives via shaft 10 a threaded and screwed shaft 7, a nut 6 on which it carries links 4 which serve to move the guns about their pivots 2. The movements of the guns are fed back at F to the computer so as to stop relative movement of the guns when the desired fire pattern has been obtained. If desired the range R and a value representing the lethal area covered by each explosive projectile may be preset into the mechanism. In modified constructions the guns move about universal joints and the spider 4 may be rotatable or each gun may be capable of independent radial and/or angular movement relatively to the other guns.
