Class 112 A chain-stitch sewing-machine with a threaded looper has looper-thread detaining means comprising a thread-confining device adapted to seize the looper-thread and hold it positively as the looper is moved away from the device to form a thread-loop for entry of the needle. Double-loop stitching by eyed needles; multiple-needle machines. The invention is described as embodied in a two-needle feed-off-the-arm machine as described in Specification 643,231, with the loopers 25 carried on a looper-bar 27 which is oscillated and reciprocated on a pivot 28 and which carries a cam-track 49 for actuating an arm' 44 mounted on a pivot screw 42 carried by a bracket 41 adjustably fixed to the side wall of the work-arm 12. A plate 50 adjustable laterally of the arm on the end of the bracket 41 is integral with a member 55 formed with two notches into which limbs of the respective looper threads are carried by the advance of the loopers, and co-operating with the member 55 is a loop-detainer 43, engaging the pivot screw 42 of the arm 44 and adjustably secured to the arm by a screw 47 and a slot: the detainer 43 is formed with a pair of hook-like parts lying close beneath the member 55 and arranged to move across the mouths of the slots in the latter member after the entry of the looper threads in these slots, so as to hold one limb of each looper thread as the loopers retire and thus cause the loops to spread for entry cf the needles.
