705,462. Controllers for electrically propelled vehicles. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., SIMMONS, A. W., and SHATTOCK, C. F. B. Nov. 24, 1952 [March 7, 1952], No. 5987/52. Class 103(1) In a controller for electrically propelled vehicles provided with electrically controlled and automatic pneumatic braking apparatus, an operating member when moved from its " off position through one pre-determined range effects the supply of electric power to the vehicle motors and when moved through another pre-determined range effects the operation of the electrically controlled brakes, in which the movement of the operating handle 3 of the controller to an emergency application position establishes communication between the brake pipe of the automatic pneumatic brake and atmosphere, thus effecting an emergency application of the brakes. Mounted on shaft 1 is a cam 2 having a projecting portion 15, and the operating handle 3. When the operating handle 3 of the controller is moved to the left of the " off " position, the shaft 1 and cam 2 rotate and the power supplied to the traction motors of the vehicle is controlled. When the operating handle is rotated in an arc on the other side of the " off " position, the electro-pneumatic brakes are controlled. At the extreme end of the latter arc is the emergency application position in which the cam 15 operates through valve stem 8 to open the spring loaded valve 14 and thus establish communication between the brake pipe through port 12 and atmosphere, thus effecting the emergency application of the pneumatic brake. Thus in the event of a sudden failure of the electric supply to the electro-pneumatic brakes, the driver can immediately make an emergency application without resorting to his pneumatic driver's brake valve. Other means of effecting the opening of the valve 14 are described and illustrated in the Specification.
