Class 69 (1) An apparatus for measuring the average density of deposition upon a surface of a liquid or powder issuing from a plurality of similar spraying jets traversed over the surface and equally spaced in a direction at right angles to the direction of traverse, comprises a container for receiving the total discharge from one of the jets, and a calibrated level indicator, adjacent the wall of the container and adjustable with respect thereto and to a calibrated scale carried thereby, the level indicator and the scale being calibrated one to indicate jet travelling speeds and the other having at least one calibration to indicate a predetermined jet spacing. and the calibrations of the level indicator and of the scale being so chosen and correlated one with the other and with the volumes of successive sections of the container that the time taken by the jet to fill the container to any pre-selected level at which the level indicator has been set to suit a particular jet spacing and traverse speed, will be inversely proportional to the average density of deposition of liquid or powder on the surface by all of the jets. Shown applied to an agricultural field liquid sprayer, the apparatus comprises a transparent jar 1 which is fixed to a spraying boom by a clip 7, the outflow from one of the jets being directed through an opening 3 in the lid 2 of the jar, down a tube 22 fixed centrally in the jar, and through ports 23 in an annular sleeve 25 so that the level of collected liquid rises without frothing. A flat arm 13 fixed to the lid 2 is calibrated as at 20 with a scale indicating the traverse speeds of the jets and carries a level indicator 14 comprising a central portion 15, which is adjustable along the length of the arm 13, and wings 16 extending laterally of the portion 15. The slide 15, which may be retained in position on the arm 13 by a spring finger 18, has a series of substantially diagonallypositioned apertures 21, each corresponding to a spacing between the jets. In operation, the jar is clipped to the spraying boom and the aperture 21 corresponding to the spacing of the jets is brought into register with the appropriate speed figure on the scale 20. The spraying operation is then started and the time taken by the liquid to reach the upper edge of the wings 16, forming the liquid level indicator, is noted by a stopwatch. The deposition density is then read off from a table carried by one of the wings 16. The other wing may carry instructions for use. The jar may be held in position by hand, and the opening 3 may have an upstanding flared boss. In a further form, the apparatus may have provision for only one jet spacing and be used to measure the deposition density with jets of different sizes or different liquids.
