Class 1261 (2) In apparatus for filling bottles or other containers with liquids having a feed conveyer from which the bottles are displaced transversely to stand under a line of filling spouts carried on a filling head and, after being filled, are further displaced transversely on to a discharge conveyer, a control is provided for intermittently operating a hydraulic device having means for raising the filling head clear of the bottles after filling and means for then controlling members which move the next bottles from the feed conveyer to stand under the spouts. Bottles are supplied by a feed conveyer 4 having spaced stops 6 and driven by a motor 2 energized intermittently through a relay 7 responsive to, e.g. the output of a washing machine. When the conveyer stops, a line of bottles is pushed transversely by members 12 so as to stand on spring-biassed supports 9 and to push previously filled bottles from supports 9 on to a continuously running discharge conveyer 10. The filling heads 20 then descend to fill the bottles from tank 19 and the members 12 are retracted, whereupon a further batch of bottles is supplied by conveyer 4. The filling heads are then raised again and a new cycle starts. The tank 19 and the filling heads are carried on a double tube 26, 27 telescoping on a pillar 37 and reciprocated by a cylinder 36 acting on a rod 34 engaging a block 32 to which the tubes 26, 27 are connected by a screw rod 3,1. To accommodate bottles of different height, the rod 31 can be screwed up or down by a worm 29, the motion, being repeated through a worm 39 to a pointer indicating the setting. In operation, filling having just been completed, liquid is drawn from a reservoir 42 by a pump and forced through passages 49, 48, 47 to space 57 to raise the cylinder 36 and, hence, the heads 20. Liquid then passes from space 57 through passages 58, 59, 46, 54, 53 to space 66 to move out cylinder 55 which pivots levers 15, 13 about pivots. 14 to cause members 12, to feed a new batch of bottles and discharge a filled batch. The throw of members 12 cam be adjusted to different bottle diameters by a cam 18. The pump then stops, whereupon cylinder 36 and the filling heads descend by gravity and cylinder 55 is retracted by a spring, displaced liquid flowing from space 66 through passages 53, 54, 46, 63, 60, 61 back to reservoir 42.
