Abstract

<PICT:0705267/III/1> A petroleum gas oil fraction boiling in the range between 400 and 850 DEG F. and contaminated with water-soluble metallic salts is washed with an amount of water (of pH5.0-7.3 and at a temperature of 160-212 DEG F.) corresponding to 10-20 per cent. of the volume of the gas oil fraction and then freed from water. Water-soluble salts which may be removed in this manner include those of iron, sodium, nickel, aluminium, vanadium, silicon, calcium and chromium. The purified gas oil may be used as a feed stock to a catalytic cracking operation. In Fig. 1, the gas oil is introduced through line 11, water of the correct pH is introduced through line 12, and the gas oil and water are mixed in mixer 13. The mixture passes to settling zone 15, where an oil phase, a water phase and an emulsion phase separate. The oil phase is withdrawn through line 16 and passes, either directly or via filter zone 24, to catalytic cracking zone 26. Filter zone 24 removes the last traces of water and may contain a bed of activated alumina, adsorptive resin for removing anions and cations, or a natural or synthetic zeolite. The water phase from settling zone 15 is withdrawn through line 18 and may be recycled. The emulsion phase from settling zone 15 is withdrawn through line 17 and passes to separation zone 29 wherein the emulsion is broken (for example electrically or by settling). Water which separates from the broken emulsion is withdrawn through line 30, while the oil phase is withdrawn through line 32. This oil may join the main oil stream in line 16, either before or after the filter zone 24, or may be discharged through valve 36.
