Abstract

705,080. Piezo-electric crystals. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Feb. 14, 1952 [June 6, 1951], No. 13433/51. Class 40 (8) An ultra-sonic absorbtion cell for absorbing ultra-sonic wave energy from a quartz &c. transducer 3 comprises an elongated member 1 made of a material similar to that of the transducer and of similar r crystallographic orientation, the member being so shaped, dimensioned and positioned as to subject the waves to a large number of reflections in its interior. The cell shown in Fig. 1 has a sloping end face 1d, the crystal 3 being mounted in intimate physical contact with the plane face 1b. If the end face 1c is inclined slightly to the face 1b a larger number of reflections is obtained. The cell may also be in the form of an exponential horn, Fig. 3, or a cone, Fig. 4 (not shown). The cell may be coated with or immersed in an absorbent semi-liquid such as wax or pitch. Alternatively, for the same purpose. a thick. fired-on spongy silver film preferably coated with solder may be used. An outer coating of bituminous material may be applied to such a coating.
