Abstract

<PICT:0705041/III/1> In the continuous refining of fatty oils with alkali, the alkali treatment being carried out in two stages and the soap formed in the first stage being separated from the oil before it enters the second stage, steam is blown through the oil during the second stage. The oil is preferably heated to about 100 DEG C. prior to the steam blowing. The oil may be finally washed, dried, bleached and deodorized by blowing with steam under vacuum. In a suitable plant the oil fed to a mixer 2 is neutralized by lye supplied through a pipe 3, and then led to a closed centrifugal separator 5 for removal of the soap formed. The oil is then fed to a mixer 8 and, by supplying steam through a pipe 9, is heated to a temperature of about 100 DEG C. Lye is added to the oil in the mixer 8 from a pipe 10 and the oil then passes to a reaction vessel 12 through which steam is blown from a pipe 13. Dilution of the lye with condensate in the vessel 12 is avoided by heating the oil to about 100 DEG C., and practically all the steam supplied thereto flows therethrough to an outlet 14, producing an intimate mixing of the oil and lye. The oil overflows through a pipe 15 to an open-type centrifugal separator 16 for removal of the freshly formed soap and is discharged through a pipe 18 for subsequent washing, drying, bleaching and deodorizing. Soda lye, potash lye, soda, water glass or mixtures thereof may be used for the second stage of the alkali treatment. The oils specified comprise rape oil, soya-bean oil and fish oil.
