Abstract
A pattern for use in the production of a series of articles of moulded or pressed sheet material having similar relief or recessed surfaces is formed by making a master sample by shaping a sheet of thermoplastic material, applying the required inscriptions or lines &c. to the surface and subjecting the sample to heat while resting it on a smooth surface whereby the sample is caused to collapse to substantially its original sheet condition. Copies of the collapsed sample may be produced by printing &c. upon sheets of the same or similar thermoplastic or a thermo-setting material, and the printed sheets pressed singly between dies of a shape and dimension corresponding to those of the master sample. The master sample may be formed of polyvinyl chloride and shaped by pressing while hot between the dies to be used to form the final articles, or the sample may be produced by hand and used as a mould to form the dies. A printing block is usually prepared from the collapsed master sample and used to produce the copies. The master sample after resuming the flat condition may be subjected to light pressure with a sheet of glass or the like. The starting sheets for the samples are usually flat, but may have other shapes, e.g. conforming to sections of a spherical surface so that the finished articles may be assembled to form a globe. Suitable inks for use on the sample comprise or include as a component polyvinyl acetate having a solvent penetrating action on the surface of the sheet. If the master sample is made of transparent material the copying of the distorted pattern may be effected by photographic projection.
