Abstract
704,888. Making washers &c. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. May 4, 1951, No. 10544/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) Shearing; rolling.-In a machine for making assembled screws and washers a strip of washers is continuously fed to a severing device by which individual washers are severed from the strip and the screws are successively meshed with the moving strip in advance of the severing device. The screws are lifted by a reciprocating plate 52 to spaced guides- 54 controlled by a regulating wheel 58 and pass by gravity down a shoot 36 to a shoot 178. The washers in strip form, Fig. 21, not shown, are fed from a rod 20 over a guide 22 to a guide block 30 by a wheel 136 slotted to receive the screw shanks and having teeth 140 engaging lugs on the washer strip. In the shoot 178 the screw heads are engaged by recesses 156 in a continuously rotated assembly wheel 152. A rod 218 with hooked end 226 is engaged by a lever 234 swung about a pin 240 by a wheel 230 and projected against spacing pressure in co-operation with a fixed cam 102 to align a screw shank with a washer. A bar carrying a pin for lateral alignment of the screw is carried by the rod 218. To eject the screws from the wheel a lever 271 with cam nose 272 is housed in the slot in the wheel to move the screw axially as it leaves the guide bar 196. The feed wheel 52 forwards the strip and screws to a severing device comprising rolls 284 with shearing teeth 296 co-operating with shear plates on a combined shear block and feed shoot 304 to sever the washers from the strip. The assembled units fall by gravity along a guide 361 between blocks 360, 362 leading to starter mechanism, 378 of the rolling unit, Fig. 41, comprising a crank reciprocated die 10 co-operating with a stationary die 19. The starter mechanism, Fig. 5, includes a finger 378 withdrawn by a cam 448 against spring pressure and normally in a forward position to cover the guide 361, Fig. 41, to retain the screws in the guide. As the screwing die reverses at its rear limit of travel the finger 378 is rapidly moved to uncover the guide and allow a screw to be fed. As the die moves forwards the finger advances to push the screw between the dies and remains in that position. After detachment of the washers the strip is fed through a guide in a block 305 and is comminuted by two fixed outside apertured cutters co-operating with an inner crank-operated apertured cutter, Fig. 9 (not shown). Specification 649,529 is referred to.
