Abstract
704,559. Making washers. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. July 6, 1951 [Aug. 3, 1950], No. 16116/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXV] Helical coils of superposed and nested lock washers are made from continuous strip stock of width sufficient to yield simultaneously a number of coils. The washers may have conical flanges 36, Fig. 3, and twisted locking-teeth 42 and they nest in the manner shown. Strip 90 is fed step by step through follow on punching, twisting and breaking dies 100, Fig. 10, at the first step the holes are punched at 104, Fig. 11, these serve for registration by pilots 112, next punches 124 and an edge punch 106a partly blank out the teeth which are completed by reversely arranged punches 108 and a punch 108a for the other edge. This leaves adjacent washers in a row and in adjoining rows connected by the end of contacting teeth. Dies 110, 138, Figs. 12 and 14, next twist the teeth as shown at 56, Fig. 14. The twisting is sufficient to cause separation of each row of washers from adjacent rows but the teeth connecting washers in the same row are twisted less so that the washers remain connected. This effect is obtained by rounding the appropriate parts of the dies 140a, 142a, Fig. 16. The separated strips pass to individual coiling-means only one of which is shown in Fig. 10. The coiling-mandrels are driven continuously from the press drive by shafts, with universal joints 190, carrying drums engaging worm-wheels on the mandrels. Bottom flanges 172 on the mandrels have pins 218 that engage the hole in the leading washer and the mandrels have part circular grooves that engage the washer teeth. Rollers 166 on pivoted arms 168 maintain the strip under even tension. At the point when the straight strip is tangent to the mandrel, a correspondingly grooved roll 202 engages the outer side of the washers and bends each washer in the plane of the strip sufficiently to cause the strip to conform to the curvature of the mandrel. The strip then passes through an inclined slot 212 on the ring 194 and is bent perpendicularly to the plane of the washers to the angle necessary for coiling and nesting. The ring 194 rests on the growing coil and maintains the washers in place; it carries the roll 202 but is wholly prevented from rotating by an arm 214 sliding on a fixed abutment 216. The slot 212 may be inclined in a radial direction also. The completed coil may be held between two rings 76, 78, Fig. 9, by bolts 80 passing through three columns of the nested washers. A handled rod 84 with a supporting cross bar may be employed for moving the completed coils. Specification 648,267 is referred to.
