704,113. Cranes. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. July 8, 1952 [July 13, 1951], No. 16639/51. Class 78 (5) A load limiting device for a crane comprises two members having a uni-directional driving connection between them mounted on a support, means for attaching one or more hoisting ropes of the crane to the first member, a friction brake between the second member and support resisting rotation of the second member relative to the support, restoring spring means between the first member and the support resisting rotation of the first member relative to the support and trip means effective upon rotation of the two members relative to the support for interrupting the supply of power to the hoisting mechanism of the crane. A pair of supports 2 pivoted at 39 to the crane support a shaft 4 to which are 'keyed plates 5 and 8 the plate 5 being bolted to the support and a hollow drum 10 holding the hoisting cable surrounds the plates. A plate 14 is mounted between the plates 5 and 8 to be freely rotatable on the shaft, the periphery of the plate has shaped recesses for balls 21 urged by springs to contract the drum for uni-directional drive between the drum and plate. The drive may otherwise be effected by ratchet and pawls. One or two brake linings 15 are secured to the plate 14. The plate 8 is urged into contact with the brake lining by a spring 16 on the shaft adjustably controlled by a nut 17. A spring 25 is anchored on the drum and the plate 8. The drum has a part 11 for the cable and a part 12 having a flat portion 13 for a roller 37, vertical movement of the roller controls the motor switch or other control means. The drum is held stationary by the brake and spring 25, when these are exceeded by the load relative movement between the drum and plate 14 takes place consequently raising the roller 37 from the flat part 13 and releasing the control means. A stop 28 on the drum normally engages a cross bar 3, this stop is elongated or an extra stop is provided on the support to limit the rotation of the drum and so prevent re-engagement of the roller with the flat part.
