Abstract

703,922. Coaster hubs. STURMEY-ARCHER GEARS, Ltd., and BROWN, W. Dec. 14, 1951 [Dec. 14, 1950], No. 30495/50. Class 136(2) [Also in Group XXIV] A combined epicyclic change-speed gear and back-pedal operated brake hub for a bicycle comprises a stationary axle a, an epicyclic change-speed gear embodying a sun member j, planet carrier k and annulus 1 mounted on the axle including a driving member g and selector-controlled means m for coupling parts of the gear to the driving member and to the wheel hub i to obtain different gear ratios, relatively movable axially loadable brake elements c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP> and a brake-actuating member o, turning with the part k of the gear, adapted to apply axial pressure to the brake assembly during backward rotation of the driving member g without producing axial pressure in either direction during forward rotation. The brake actuating member comprises a ring o mounted on a pair of extensions k<SP>2</SP> on the planet carrier k. Each extension has one inclined face k<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 2, and a square face k<SP>4</SP> and the ring o is formed on its inner face with lugs having faces o<SP>3</SP>, o<SP>4</SP>, complementary to those on the member k<SP>2</SP>. On back pedalling the inclined faces o<SP>3</SP>, k<SP>3</SP>, engage and compel the ring to move to the left, Fig. 1. Three gear ratios may be selectively obtained. High gear is obtained when the selector in engages bearing pins n on planet pinions k<SP>1</SP>, drive being transmitted to the shell i through driving pawls l<SP>3</SP> carried by the annulus 1. Middle gear is obtained through the same pinions l<SP>3</SP> when the selector m is engaged with dogs l<SP>1</SP> in the annulus. Low gear is obtained when the selector, while still engaged by the dogs 1<SP>1</SP> is moved axially to trip the pawls l<SP>3</SP>, whereupon pawls o<SP>1</SP> carried by the ring o transmit the drive to the hub shell i.
