Abstract

<PICT:0703283/IV(c)/1> <PICT:0703283/IV(c)/2> <PICT:0703283/IV(c)/3> <PICT:0703283/IV(c)/4> In apparatus for treating textile webs by fluids blown on to the web 6 through nozzles 4, separated by discharge channels 5, as the web travels through a chamber 1, protecting shutters 10, 11 are interposed between the blowing means 3 and the web when movement of the latter is interrupted but the operation of the blowing means is maintained. The shutters 10, 11 which co-operate with transverse partitions 13, and longitudinal partitions 14 are connected by arms 15 to threaded sleeves 16 on the threaded rods 17, 18 having threads in opposite directions and the shutters have guide members 20 integral with sleeves 21 sliding on cross rods 22, the controls and guides being located in some of the channels 5. The rods 17, 18 are rotated by pulleys 25, belts and pulleys 23, 24 through magnetic clutches 26 connected to the stop and start mechanism of the web feed to move the shutters into or out of closed position. A panel 30 is displaced, when the shutters are closed by rotation of a threaded spindle 29 to uncover aperture 31 and allow discharge of the warm gases remaining beneath the web. When the motion of the web is re-started a valve 34 is opened to admit superheated vapours to compensate for the losses of drying fluid and to expel the air which has entered through aperture 31. In a modification a flexible band is unwound to be interposed between the nozzles and the web. In a further modification, Figs. 5, 7, the nozzles 4 are movable vertically and pivoted shutters 47 having a counter weight 49 are normally held open by the nozzles but when the latter are raised the shutters take up a horizontal overlapping position to form a protective screen and at the same time a panel 58 is raised to uncover aperture 59 and allow escape of hot fluid. In a variant, Fig. 7, shutters 147 instead of being counterweighted are connected by links 68 to the nozzles. Specification 687,006, [Group XXIV], is referred to.
